This guide is listing all the parameters concerning the choice of a rugged display, frequent standards, technical or mechanical specifications.
There are various standards to evaluate the ruggedness of a display in terms of impermeability to liquids and solids, shocks, vibrations and explosions resistance.
IEC-60529 classify diverses enclosure protection codes (IP). It allows to determine the ingress protection degree to liquids and solids.
*A IP69 display is not necessarily submersible, if that case it will have a double certification such as IP68 / IP69.

IEC-62262 is listing IK codes. They allow to evaluate the mechanical shock resistance of a display.

The MIL-STD-810G/F is an american standard obtained after various extremes conditions tests (temperature, shocks, vibrations, altitude...).
It assures an extremely rugged display that can be used for military applications.

The Atex standard is made for explosive atmospheres.
There are 6 zones types depending on the risk degree, 3 are for high gas concentration atmospheres :
Zone 0 : Higher level, indicates a permanent risk of explosion.
Zone 1 : Indicates a potential risk in a occasionally explosive atmosphere
Zone 2 : there can be an explosion risk in case of an accident or dysfunction.
For the high dust concentration atmospheres :
Zone 20 : permanent risk
Zone 21 : potential, occasional risk
Zone 22 : low risk, in case of accident or dysfunction
For the integration and the installation of the display, various mounting types exist.
The choice of our display mounting is mainly depending on your environment and your requirements.
> Rack mount displays (6) allow an easy integration in standard 19" cabinets.
> Panel mount displays fit in desks, operator panels... We can also talk about Flush mount displays when the fixations are not visible (2).
> Open frame displays have no covering aound the LCD area, they can be clamped in panels by the back (3).
Finally, VESA mounting interfaces allow the adaptation of diverses supports : wall (4), arm (5), desktop...
VESA is a standard of mounting interface. The horitontal or vertical distance between each fasteners is from 75 mm (3") to 800 mm (31 1/2").
VESA mounting interface fits with various supports types, wall, desktop, reclining, adjustable...
After choosing your displat ruggedness, protection and mounting, you must consider various technical features for the active area of your display.
You can refer to our dedicated guide about screen resolution.
It explains the concepts of ratio, size, precision and resolution of a display, and defines the most used standards.
> Brightness is always mesured in candela/m². The higher this ratio, the brighter the screen. 300 cd/m² is often enough for inside applications, but for brighter environments, you must consider choosing a display with more than 1000 cd/m² of brightness.
> The constrast ratio is mesuring the maximum brightness gap between white and black. The higher this ratio, the more accurate your contrast and your colors will be.
In terms of rugged displays, you will often have to choose between two types of touchscreen technology:
Resistive touchscreen :
The touch is causing the two conductor layers to create an electrical information at a precise point (single-touch). The screen is often more rugged against, water, dust and grease than the capacitive touchscreen. Also, it can be operated even with gloves, stylus or other objects. The main drawback is that mutiple touch point recognition is not possible.
Capacitive touchscreen :
The screen is made of an electrical grid. When touched, the finger of the user charge itself and create a potential gap at a precise point. This technology is more rugged against shocks and allow multiple touch point recognition simultaneously (multi-touch).
But, they must be used barehanded.
Analog or digital, there are various video interfaces and assiociated signals. The choice whil mainly depend on our source signal.
You can refer to our dedicated guide, about the diverses video signals, interfaces, and connectors.
